AGI Past President Receives Honorary Doctorate Award

Dr. Tony Oteng-Gyasi, a Lawyer, Economist and an Industrialist, led the AGI as President from 2005 to 2009 during which period, his technical expertise and managerial initiatives helped in positioning AGI as a strong brand within the industrial landscape of Ghana.

Dr. Oteng-Gyasi is the Chairman and Managing Director of Tropical Cable & Conductor Ltd (TCCL) in Tema, a wholly Ghanaian owned manufacturer of electric and telecommunications cables and conductors. He is also the Managing Director of Western Rod & Wire Ltd (a subsidiary of TCCL) and Tropical Products Ltd.

He has represented the AGI on a number of both public and private institutions. Theses include: Board Member of Export Development & Agricultural Investment Fund (EDAIF); Immediate Past Chairman of University of Ghana Governing Council; Member of the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) Governing Council; Past Board Member of Ghana Institute of Management & Public Administration (GIMPA); Chairman of Economic Affairs Committee of AGI; Vice President of FAWAG; and many others. These institutions have benefitted immensely from his knowledge and expertise, both legally and economically.

Dr. Oteng-Gyasi has set up the Tropical Saint Anthony Foundation which provides scholarships to needy and financially handicapped students applying to study or studying at the University of Ghana, undergraduate programs with emphasis on science. He is the Board Chairman of the Foundation.

In attendance to witness the award ceremony were the Speaker of parliament, Rt. Hon Edward Doe Adjaho; the Chancellor of the University of Ghana, His Excellency Mr. Kofi Annan (Past UN Secretary-General); the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ernest Aryeetey; Chairman of the University Council, His Lordship Justice Date-Bah; Members of the University Council, Pro-Vice Chancellors, Provosts, Deans and Directors of the University. Also in attendance were Heads of Department, Heads of Halls, Family Members and well wishers of the Honouree, Past Officials of the University Community and a cross section of the media.

On this occasion of celebrating the Honorary Doctorate Award, the president, National Council, Management, Staff and the entire Membership of the AGI salutes Dr. Oteng-Gyasi for his outstanding contribution to the industry. We have no doubt that his award will encourage many to aspire in making similar contributions to industry and society at large.
